TMJ Pain

Specialized physiotherapy assessment and treatment for jaw pain, headaches, and temporomandibular joint disorders.

What is TMJ Disorder?

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the hinge joint that connects your jawbone to your skull, located just in front of each ear. This joint works together with the surrounding muscles and ligaments to allow you to open and close your mouth, chew, speak, and yawn. TMJ disorders, also commonly referred to as TMD (temporomandibular disorders), are a group of conditions that cause pain and dysfunction in the jaw joint and the muscles that control jaw movement.

TMJ disorders can range from mild discomfort to severe, debilitating pain that significantly impacts daily activities such as eating, speaking, and even sleeping. The good news is that physiotherapy offers effective, non-invasive treatment options that can help restore normal jaw function and reduce pain.

Common Symptoms of TMJ Disorders

  • Jaw pain or tenderness
  • Pain in or around the ear
  • Difficulty or discomfort while chewing
  • Aching facial pain
  • Locking of the jaw joint
  • Clicking or popping sounds when opening or closing the mouth
  • Headaches, especially in the temples
  • Neck pain and stiffness
  • Limited range of motion when opening the mouth

What Causes TMJ Disorders?

TMJ disorders can develop from a variety of causes, and in many cases, multiple factors contribute to the condition. Common causes include teeth grinding or clenching (bruxism), which places excessive stress on the jaw joint and surrounding muscles. Jaw injury or trauma, such as a blow to the face or whiplash, can also trigger TMJ problems. Arthritis in the TMJ, including osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, may lead to joint degeneration and pain.

Stress is another significant contributor, as it often leads to increased muscle tension in the jaw, neck, and face. Poor posture, particularly forward head posture from prolonged desk work or screen time, can alter the alignment of the jaw and place additional strain on the TMJ. Misalignment of the teeth or jaw may also play a role in the development of TMJ disorders.

How Physiotherapy Can Help

Physiotherapy is a highly effective approach for managing TMJ disorders. Jumana uses a combination of hands-on techniques and patient education to address the underlying causes of your jaw pain and restore normal function. Her treatment approach includes:

  • Manual therapy techniques to improve jaw mobility and reduce joint restrictions
  • Soft tissue release of the muscles around the jaw, neck, and head to alleviate tension and pain
  • Posture assessment and correction to address contributing factors such as forward head posture and rounded shoulders
  • Exercise therapy to strengthen and stretch the jaw muscles, improving coordination and range of motion
  • Education on jaw habits and self-management strategies, including relaxation techniques and awareness of clenching patterns
  • Dry needling or acupuncture for muscle tension relief, when appropriate for the patient's condition
  • Guidance on stress management techniques to reduce the muscle tension that often contributes to TMJ symptoms

What to Expect During Your Assessment

During your initial assessment, Jumana will conduct a thorough evaluation of your jaw movement, including how far you can open your mouth, whether there is any deviation or clicking during movement, and which movements reproduce your symptoms. She will also assess your posture, neck mobility, and the muscles around your jaw, head, and neck to identify areas of tension, weakness, or restriction. Based on her findings, Jumana will develop a personalized treatment plan designed to address the specific factors contributing to your TMJ disorder and help you achieve lasting relief.
